Art Department
Using Mixed Media
The art department at Bridge Inn has been established for eight years now and encourages students from all levels of ability to participate in a bewilderment of different media and approaches, from acrylic painting to screen printing, sculpture in clay (we have our own kiln), mosaic, re-imagined and re-purposed objects and waste material, large scale papier-mache, willow, both dried. We have good links with local drama groups such as All Souls in Southport and have produced props, including a twenty-foot-long Chinese style dragon for award winning pantomimes and for local primary schools.
Encouraging Creativity
We encourage creativity at all levels from our students and are often astonished by what they produce, and we especially love their work to be used in real world events such as plays so that the students can see that their work has purpose and meaning. We work with individuals to produce work for their own consumption as well as group activities that allow students of every level of ability to be part of work that has enabled the farm to scoop three Gold Awards in successive years at Southport Flower Show.
Our Work
We have large scale acrylic paintings, made by both individuals and teams of students on display in Killen Green Park, Netherton and Hesketh Park in Southport. We encourage and nurture an awareness of the work of other artists, both famous and local by visiting galleries such as The Tate Liverpool and Lady Lever and often base work in the classrooms upon the visit. Large sculptures based on the work of Guiseppe Arcimboldo were commissioned for Southport Flower Show and displayed in a shopping centre in the town as well as at the show, and we had two long term exhibitions at The Waterfront Art Centre in Southport with a huge floor space, the students worked on projects inside the exhibition allowing the public to meet them as well as seeing them work. We have also had an exhibition at The Atkinson Art centre in Southport.
We love involving the students in the community, and have involved them in making lanterns and light up masks to participate in The Liverpool Lantern Company’s Halloween Parades, and we built a dozen light up willow and tissue lanterns that floated on the lake in Sefton Park, Liverpool as part of the City of Light installation which featured on the national news last year. The two team leaders who lead the department both have degrees in art and have experience in teaching and working in a variety of media and are constantly looking for new techniques to introduce to the students and for different platforms for their work to be displayed.
